In 1975, Harland (Butch) Mingus Jr. of Lansing, Michigan started cleaning carpet and hard floors from a pick-up truck. This early development was to further the services of “Butch’s Janitor Service”, which he started from his home to supplement his income from Banner Linen Service. These two companies were replaced by his entrepreneurial venture in the corporate small business world when he and his life-long friend started “Entrance Mats Plus, Inc.” in Grand Ledge, Michigan in 1984. Simultaneously, his wife Margaret pursued her aspirations to own an antique shop called “Country Linens” with her friend and partner, also in Grand Ledge.
Harland (Lenny) Mingus III refurbished the old portable carpet cleaning equipment to help pay for college. Shortly after, he purchased a van dedicated to residential carpet cleaning, which also served as a warehouse, office, and vehicle. Converting a room from their apartment, he and his wife, Dena, grew the business “Rug Relief.” This business allowed them to quit their jobs at the City of Lansing and State of Michigan. In 1990, all four Mingus’ ceased operations under their other businesses and joined forces to form “HARLen’s Carpet Care & Consultants, Inc.”
After 19 years together, the company broke ground at 3436 Franette Road, Lansing, Michigan to erect a 12,000 sq ft facility that was completed January 1, 2009, marking Butch’s 35 year and Lenny’s 25 year anniversary in the cleaning industry. The company has grown to serve tens of thousands of residential and commercial clients cleaning millions of square feet of flooring in the Greater Lansing area, expanding personnel and services to become a complete 24-hour cleaning/restoration, consulting, inspection, retailing, supplier service oriented company.
Together, with God as their co-pilot, they have maneuvered through life’s challenges to successfully offer employment for 25 people and zero lay-offs thru 2011. With a combined sixty years of experience, and a remarkable staff; together they are preparing for the next generation of technicians.
